BIOGRAPHY
As a junior, Vermonter Andy Newell was ranked among the top sprinters in the world. When he moved into the senior ranks, Newell began building experience and confidence, and he's gone on to post the best American results internationally - including the first U.S. podium in more than two decades. The 2010 season was a hard fought one for Newell, who capped things off on a high note when he took to the podium for the third time in his career, taking third place in a World Cup in Norway.
ANDY SAYS
The 2010 season was my best ever on the world cup tour so pretty much the entire winter was a lot of fun. It was super exciting to be in the hunt for a top-three finish in the sprint World Cup standings and it came right down to the last race. In the end I finished the year ranked fourth in the world which was a personal best for me. The Olympics weren't my best races of the year, but the experience has motivated me more than ever to push toward the 2014 games. My number one goal for next year is to medal at World Championships and also grab as many World Cup podiums as I can along the way.
FIRST TRACKS
Newell was skiing by three, racing by five and [I] haven't stopped since. After moving through Stratton Mountain School and its well-respected cross country program, he produced top-10 results at Junior Worlds as a teenager. He was top-10 in the sprint at Junior Worlds for three straight years, '01-03. He won his first Continental Cup race, a sprint, at Silver Star, B.C., in November 2001 and moved on to clinch a place at his first Olympics.
OFF THE SNOW
When I'm not training or competing I'm hanging with buddies, skateboarding and building on my land in Vermont. I'm really passionate about pushing cross country skiing forward in the U.S., so I work a lot with kids and juniors and spend a lot of time producing ski movies to get kids involved and fire them up.
