Cross Country Training System

The Cross Country Training System (CCTS) was designed by a group of national team and club cross country coaches and the USSA High Performance Department to provide a blueprint of the optimal developmental progression of a high performance cross country skier from their first introduction to sport through the achievement of their full potential. It takes into account the latest scientific research on children's development and endurance sport and is designed to maximize critical periods of development as an athlete matures and gains experience. This approach will allow each individual athlete to achieve their full potential in cross country skiing.

The CCTS matrix provides an outline of the system on one page. It captures essential concepts for sport participation, conditioning, technique and tactics, equipment selection and preparation, performance psychology, and competition focus.
