A move from the Midwest to the nordic combined Mecca known as Steamboat Springs, CO was the boost Adam Loomis needed to take his career to the next level. After just a season in Colorado, Loomis had collected solid results at all levels of competition and earned an invite to the U.S. Nordic Combined Team.

The 2012 season, Loomis’ first with the U.S. Team, was a good one for the Wisconsin native. He finished 12th at Junior World Championships and had the third fastest cross country time in the event. He also competed on the Continental Cup circuit and scored points in eight events.

Loomis experienced a tough year of competition in 2013 but is focused on putting together a complete 2014, hopefully capping it with his first Olympic Team invite.

In terms of this year, I went into the season with some pretty high expectations. Summer and fall training went pretty well and I definitely expected to improve off my good results from the year before. Unfortunately, I didn't have the results that I expected—both skiing and jumping were off from what I'm capable of.

So I've put that behind me and am really excited to be back at training and refocused for next year. Obviously, this is an Olympic year and my biggest goal is to make the team. I know that with some good early season results I definitely have a good shot at it. More specifically, I hope to start strong on Continental Cup and get on the podium there and then earn enough World Cup points to earn a spot for myself and the team on the World Cup.

Back in Wisconsin, Loomis grew up surrounded by both nordic and alpine skiing - his parents had him on skis at age two. A multi-sport athlete as a youth, he became captivated with ski jumping while watching the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics when he was 10 years old. That then became his focus, joining the Eau Claire Flying Eagles Ski Club. “Since then, I’ve been at it full throttle!”

Always an outdoor and athletic junkie, Loomis loves to water ski, and he grew up playing a variety of sports from soccer to hockey to cross country running. He has taken advantage of the Rocky Mountain lifestyle since moving to Steamboat. He’s a big fan of the freedom of backcountry telemark skiing and is also pretty good on a slack line. He’s had a host of part-time jobs from a counselor at a science camp to an alpine slide employee, as well as serving up pizza and gelato at Ciao Gelato in Steamboat. He is also taking courses at Westminster College and online at Devry University.
